[Newcastle Voted YES]

[16 November 2017]

Newcastle Votes YES to Same Sex Marriage!

We’re super proud of you Newy!

You don’t suffer fools, and you don’t put up with bullshit, and this week you proved it.

The team at Something Blue has been sweating on a YES in the Same Sex Marriage (SSM) Plebiscite – and we got it, on Wednesday the 15th of November 2017, when the stats revealed that 61.6% of Aussies, and 74.8% of our fellow Novocastrians voted yes.

.

That’s a significant majority, and in the Newcastle and surrounding Federal Electorates, a resounding YES that finished above the national average, with the Hunter voting 64.4%, Shortland 67.7% and Paterson 65.5% for the yes team.

And you know what? It’s personal for us, because we have the rare privilege of being there when couples share their love by celebrating before the world with life long commitment through marriage. How awesome is that? And what’s even more awesome, is that every wedding is unique, every couple share an impossibly rare and beautiful thing, because every single time the love is new.

But it’s also personal because Katherine’s wonderful brother Jonathan is gay.

Katherine is a Something Blue photographer, and has always fought with fierce pride for her brother, and the equal rights of all humans – in fact, her whole family have fought the law that prevents SSM, a law that treats some people like they are less than human.

Her parents, Sue and Trevor, have been waging a passionate mum-&-dad-war in Mt Gambier, where her dad is a dentist and has appeared in the local paper on multiple occasions, engaging in public debate in a variety ways, including through letter’s to the editor.

.

.

One of his favourite tricks is to dress in women’s clothing and haunt public events, engaging fellow citizens in debate and highlighting the dangerous contradictions that characterise their arguments – and it’s a good thing, because Mt Gambier is in the Electorate of Barker where the yes vote scraped in at 52.3%.

.

While Something Blue hasn’t, for obvious reasons, had the chance to shoot an actual same sex wedding, the whole team proudly celebrates the love of same sex couples from our time with beautiful people like Anthony & Daniel or Trent & Paul.

We are so excited for all the same-sex couples out there who will soon be able to choose whether or not they would like to get married, just like the rest of us.
